Fauré's Requiem and extras - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - 28th October 2010

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation offers us, this week, a trio of interesting works, including two choral ones, which is why we decided to include this concert on this blog.

The concerto for organ, timpani and string orchestra by Francis Poulenc is a striking work. It starts harshly and discordant, but the melodic lines develop into a soft, pleasant, sometimes valse-like, bucolic spirit. Yves Rechsteiner was secure in the organ, skilled in changing registers even using, near the end, a foot for this purpose.

I cannot say that Vivaldi is one of my favorite composers. His Gloria does not escape this feeling. It is not a landmark work of the Baroque. It lives of its first number, whose melody we can all easily identify. The rest is very vivaldi-like, of course, but unimaginative and unvibrant. The Gulbenkian Choir was perfect. Ana Quintans and particularly Lucia Duchonova, with their deep voices and clean and beautiful tone, matched to the performance of the Choir. I felt the Orchestra much more towards a Classic style. I had some difficulty in feeling the spirit of the Baroque in some passages.

The highlight of this concert was, without doubt, the Fauré’s Requiem. I believe that this work is perhaps the most heavenly of musical creations of all time. However, it occupies the 2nd place of my Requiem podium. After a slow solemn and powerful start (Introit and Kyrie), the work finds its best passages in the Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei and In Paradisum. Luís Rodrigues sang very well better than in the Libera me than in the Offertory, but the star was Ana Quintans. Her heavenly voice created a sublime and touching Pie Jesu. The Orchestra was superb under the direction of Rolf Beck and the Gulbenkian Choir was, once again, at the highest level.

To see again on the 29th of October at 7pm and to discover or hear again in two of the best available recordings.

Under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner...

Or with a cristal clear Bryn Terfel and a celestial Cecilia Bartoli...

(Please see review in english below)

Bravissima, Edita!

Edita Gruberova confirms her triumph as Lucrezia Borgia at the Wiener Staatsoper –October 18th, 2010

Last October 18th, Edita Gruberova made the last of a series of five concerts as Lucrezia Borgia at the Vienna Opera. The Premiere was held on October 2nd and I had the opportunity to comment on it in this blog, so I will not dwell on too much about that concert.

Tonight the capacity of the room was more than exhausted and there were many who, in vain, desperate for a ticket outside. Those who could see and hear Edita Gruberova in this night of glory in the Wiener Staatsoper were, indeed, very lucky. The singer, who received an overwhelming applause when stepping in, did not disappoint the public, who praised her with fervor enthusiasm.

Immediately after the first few notes the artist took us to an ethereal dimension with the faultless legato, the crystalline tone of her voice, the perfect acrobatic coloratura, the treble in pianissimo, absolutely miraculous.

In addition to her extraordinary vocal perfection, Edita did a great representation of the role of Lucrezia, confirming her talent as a great actress, widely recognized throughout the world: the gestures, the facial expressions, the exclamations that her look and her voice conveyed, the pain in her face, experiencing the physical and psychological feelings of the character. And, please note, all in a concert version of an opera. Even without the support scenarios, Edita Gruberova brought us a complete and expert staged Lucrezia.

The climax of the action, as well as the technical and interpretative difficulty, arise in the end, when Lucrezia Borgia faces the pain of her son's death, and an overwhelming sense of guilt. Tonight, I was only two rows from the stage, so close that I could feel the emotion of Edita. I could see that tears were streaming down her face and her lips trembled as she sang Era desso il figlio mio. It was absolutely shivering. The whole audience was in a trance, before that magnificent and unparalleled performance. Indeed, Edita Gruberova confirms, increasingly, the well-deserved title of Primadonna assoluta.

After the fantastic and lengthy high E with which Edita Gruberova ends the opera, the entire audience stood up and instantly shouted "Brava" ecstatically. Dozens of people approached the stage and offered flowers and other gifts to Edita that, gently, bowed with a smile to accept the gifts from the enthusiastic audience. Endless "flashes" came from the multitude of cameras and mobile phones as everyone sought to capture the image of Edita Gruberova.

The other singers, particularly José Bros and Michele Pertussi, had tremendous performances. Less secure and bright, but very correct, was Laura Polverelli, who always seemed to be a little nervous.

The applause lasted for no less than half an hour. The crowd cried "Edita, Edita” because they wanted Edita Gruberova to return to the stage again and again, despite having the room lights partially off, trying to demobilize the public. From one of the boxes, someone hung a banner that read: "Edita, quale incanto".

Outside, dozens of fans waited for Edita Gruberova, who all attended and signed autographs for all. The applause and cries of "Brava" sounded throughout the Herbert von Karajan Platz as Edita Gruberova walked away from the opera house, waving to the public and carrying several bouquets of flowers.

Bravissima, Edita!

WF – No meu “gira-discos” – Die Zauberflöte – W. A. Mozart

(review in english below)

WF – On my “Gramophone” – Die Zauberflöte – W. A. Mozart

I was unable to attend the Cosi fan tutte at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation last September. After reading the enthusiastic review of FanáticoUm, I was curious to listen to the Mozart of René Jacobs.

Having seen on DVD, a few weeks ago, a staging of the Magic Flute by the Opernhaus Zürich, I decided to bet on hearing the new recording of this opera by René Jacobs.

Vocally strong singers, with beautiful voice, are able to transport us instantly to the environment of Mozart’s last Opera, written in the year of his death.

Jacobs options are innovative in some passages, different from other recordings,. For example, the text is richer, sometimes overlapping interventions at the beginning of arias such as "Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja”, which ends in an original way; and he opts for a slower pace at the beginning of the famous duet between Papageno and Papagena (I cannot say that I admire that ... this is the only passage that caused me some surprise and keeps me from considering this recording absolutely close to perfection). It is excellent the lyricism of Tamino in the aria "Dies Bildnis ist th bezubernd schön" and the vocal presence of the Queen of the Night in the aria "The Zitte nicht, mein lieber Sohn!" and in the famous "Der Hölle Rache.".

The sound effects are very good, and the sound quality and sense of space you get are unique and striking, in part due to the recording location but also, for sure, also due to the use of period instruments.

This recording is a modern reference of this opera and a must have for any opera lover.

Also a must have to add to the Jacobs set is the DVD recording by Nikolaus Harnoncourt at the Opernhaus Zürich – a production which is still on the scene at this Opera House this season.

Harnoncourt rules as a true Mozart Master, and Ruben Drole as Papageno is the ultimate singer. Young and with a great baritone voice, he combines a spontaneous and free humorous way that impresses everyone.

Elena Mosuc is strong as the Queen. Julia Kleit is heavenly as Pamina. Matti Salminen retains his usual level, as Sarastro, but tends to look too much towards Harnoncourt while he sings. Christoph Strehl does not begin well vocally but he ends up to be a very acceptable Tamino.

The scenario is modern but dynamic, labyrintic, where doors and a sense of movement on stage make the action roll consistently.

A good addition to the Jacobs recording.

Good listening and viewing to everyone.

(review in english below)

Das Rheingold - MetLive HD - Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - October 16th, 2010 (pre-recorded October 9th) - Levine and Lepage mark a new Era?

Allow me one brief moment of solemn silence

Thank you.

In the fourth season of live broadcasts from the Met, we finally have the opportunity to attend the famous 1pm matinees, which until now could only be heard live through the radio station Antena2 in Portugal. I leave a word of appreciation and encouragement to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, as I think we all agree, is currently the largest organization promoting good music in our country.

Now ... another moment of silence and this even more solemn ...

Thank you.

With a pregnancy of of 5 years, today we are witnessing the beginning of the new production of the Ring of the Nibelung Lepage-Levine, at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Being a profound opera lover, I am perfectly convinced that this production marks a turn in the history of the Opera and I am happy to see that this is through my highly esteemed Richard Wagner. If Wagner had the opportunity to listen to this Das Rheingold he would probably die again with heart infarction, not of terror but of extreme joy and satisfaction.

For this production of Das Rheingold, the Met managed to gather a range of excellent singers not only for the perfect pitch and adjusted age for each character they are playing, but also by the momentum quality of the voice and and dramatic / interpretative ability. If we add to this the perfect approach of James Levine along with his sublime Orchestra, and a staging capable of leaving us with no breath, we have perfection in Opera. We reached this perfection today. I find it difficult to distinguish this or that singer because they were all at their best. But I will try to say something individually.

Eric Owens was a huge surprise! His Alberich was simply fantastic! What a voice and how he merged with the part... Excellent! There was only one moment in which he lacked his voice (did he cough or sneezed?) in the 4th frame, but disguised it so well that it sounded perfect.

Gerhard Siegel's Mime is the best nowadays and he has been showing that from some years now. Today was no exception. Perfect pitch for the role and great attitude on stage – his interpretive mannerisms are unparalleled ... The reference I have on this role is Heinz Zednik and I dare say that, from today, is Siegel. He gave us a very good appetizer for Siegfried in the next season.

Bryn Terfel was very, very well. It's amazing how, being his second production as Wotan, he has already acquired a maturity in such a profound role. The voice sounded more crystalline than usual, less "barked" as many define it. This reflects the excellent voice momentum of the singer. I hope it last for at least 10 years more with the quality of the interpretation that he gave us today.

Richard Croft was a convincing Loge. Excellent voice for the role of the (semi) God of Fire. The interaction with Terfel in the 3rd scene, while trying to hoodwink Alberich, was sublime.

Fasolt and Fafner were brilliantly interpreted by Franz-Josef Selig and Hans-Peter Konig. But what about Franz-Josef Selig? What a Fasolt! What depth in the lower range of his voice... what pure and lovely voice... what a dramatic presence on stage! His farewell to Freia was superb!

In women singers, the biggest surprise was Erda. Patricia Bardon dominated his scene incisively and with great effect. A perfect “legato”, dramatically effective, in one of the passages that mark the course of the drama of the Ring. Stephanie Blythe’s Fricka has a perfect presence on stage. The Rhinmaidens were musically perfect.

They were all at a superlative level!

James Levine, one of the greatest Wagnerian conductors, will probably become the greatest of all after today and even more when we see the end of this Ring. I have always been a fan of Levine's approach to Wagner. I cherish, with great appreciation, his recording of Parsifal in Bayreuth made by the recording label Phillips. Perhaps the best orchestral interpretation ever, in my humble opinion.

Levine lives Wagner. The dynamics and pacing that he prints to the opera are perfect and I can only say that, along with his superb Orchestra, he gave us an interpretation worthy of the gods. Flawless! Perfect! Can we call him James Divine?!

I leave for the end the biggest revolution: the staging by Robert Lepage. I dare say that, at least for the productions of Wagner's operas, there will be a B.L (before Lepage) and a A.L (after Lepage) period.

The idea of multi-purpose platform is simply brilliant and effective. How is it possible to make so much with so little? (although all the engineering behind this being so complex). This is able to produce lots of different environments in the course of the operas and always seeming appropriate.

The simulation of the waters of the Rhine with Rhinmaidens leading to the release of air bubbles motion sensed is simply divine.

The image of fire that surrounds Loge on the platform, the lighting of his fingers with a breath is great.

Details like the snake with real and extreme body on the platform...

...the frog that looks alive, the Wotan and Loge journey to the kingdom of the Nibelungs, with actors suspended in progress on the platform...

... Froh´s rainbow in which the Gods enter Valhalla... Awesome!

What about the effect of Loge with his hands and fingers laying over Freia? He lights her as a Woman and, at the same time, he warmly protects her as a heavenly gift – the gift of Woman – as he sings that no where in the Universe he found a person who did not find the love of a Woman the most precious gift.

And what about the detail of the spear of Wotan uplifting Albreich’s armin order to see expose the Ring? And the moment when Alberich calls his slaves in order for them to bring him the gold and extends his hand with the Ring in complete sync with the orchestra? SUBLIME!

I am surrendered to this production and April seems too far away to wait for Die Walkure ...

(english version below)

Nunca tinha assistido a nada assim.

No final do 1º acto – 1º intervalo estavam assim:

Tristan und Isolde - Opernhaus Zϋrich - 10 October 2010 - Peter Seiffert reinvents the role of Tristan, singing it in progressive dysphonia ...

This production of Tristan and Isolde at the Zϋrich Opera House, which goes all along this October, was very promising. The presence of four Wagnerian giants: Waltraud Meier, Peter Seiffert, Matti Salminen and Bernard Haitink was a real treat.

A few days before the premiere, Waltraud Meier walked away, allegedly by artistic differences with Bernard Haitink. She was replaced by the unknown to me Barbara Schneider-Hofsteter.

What to do with the tickets in my hand? Use them, of course. From 4 we went to 3 giants… Last Sunday, when a person from the opera showed on stage to give an announcement, I feared the worst: Salminen, who had sung Der Fliegende Hollander in Paris (24/09 reviewed in this blog) will not be singing? No, it was not that. What a relief. Peter Seiffert was not in good vocal form, but he would sing anyway. Everyone applauded. I felt a cold sensation on my spine. In vocal bad condition he would adventure himself in the role of Tristan? This was not going to find a happy ending… With a first row place, I watched a 1st act where Seiffert, while sucking on a candy (probably herbal Swiss ...) offered us a strong voice, without much hesitation, with one or two discrete signals typical of those suffering from laryngeal problem, but easily solved. The end of the 1st act was pretty intense and, in general, along with the opening and the two monologues of King Marke, it was the best moment of the evening.

If the 1st act was acceptable, the 2nd was a nightmare! Right from the beginning of the love duet, his voice broke. The "ghost" that haunted the voice of Ben Heppner in the London Tristan in 2009 to which the Fanatics went (reviewed in this blog) was striking back, this time in Zurich. Periods of instability characterized by vocal sensation of phlegm and "boom and bust" type oscillation over the baseline in long notes, came along with better moments where, even forcing the voice, the true Seiffert showed himself (we're not talking about a singer who has no voice but a singer with the voice occasionally ill). The result was the complete breakdown of the dramatic setting of the opera and the beginning of the fall of an evening which could still prove to be very good, apart from everything that had been not so good so far. In addition to sweets, now it was the water and the fake wine who tried to help Seiffert.

If the 2nd act was nightmare, the 3rd was of Terror! I had never seen anything like that. Two to three minutes was all it took to Seiffert voice to enter a deplorable level. Fully dysphonic to the highest degree - there were times when he opened his mouth and the sound simply did not come out! No sweets could help, no water could help, nothing! The voice simply did not exist! Villazon, despite not being a role to him, he could have sung this part better ... and DURING his own vocal cord surgery…

It's fair to put a singer in this situation, even if Seiffert wanted to do it?! This should not happen in an opera house like this! I recall a similar episode and not so onerous. Two years ago, I heard over the Internet, the second Valkyrie in the last stages of the Ring at the Met by Otto Schenk. Placido Domingo was ill and not feeling well but he would still sing. He was replaced in the middle of the first act and exchanged places with Gary Lehman who ended the act and the opera. Need I say more?!...

Let us now turn to what of positive I can tell you about the evening.

Brangäne was performed by an average Michelle Breedt. Endowed with little figure and not so powerful voice we could barely hear second warning during the Act 2 duet between Tristan and Isolde.

Barbara Schneider-Hofsteter was a good substitute for Waltraud Meier. I honestly think that Meier´s voice has lost most of what it takes to play Isolde, although she could compensate it with interpretative abilities. But these were present in sharp Schneider-Hofsteter. A good actress, she had perhaps his worst moment in the interpretive passage after both lovers drink the filter. Power combined with an unshouted voice allowed, for a brief moment, to forget the horror of Seiffert. It has, however, a tick that I dislike: when she sings the open vowels, especially with sharp outlines, she makes a yawn with her mouth, scenically ugly, though vocally effective.

Kurwenal by Martin Gantner was excellent. Fantastic baritone. Firm voice, dazzled in the 3rd act, opposed to an exhausted Seiffert.

Matti Salminen
is a colossus! A superb King Marke, especially in the 3rd act where he did not have to sing sitted. It was the best of the night with a bass voice that still resonates throughout the theater.

The Orchestra and Bernard Haitink were sublime! The sound that came out of the pit was rich, textured, allowing to understand clearly each melodic line of each group; synchronous attacks (with one exception with early entry of the violins) and perfect dynamics.

The production by Claus Guth is curiously clever and original. It transports the action to the home of Otto Wesendonk, printing the actual love triangle Richard - Mathilde - Otto for Tristan - Isolde - Marke, who is in the genesis of this opera. Several rooms - bedroom (in red), dining room (in shades of blue and visible in the video below), garden (with large pots of plants) and a wall with three doors in white - will run, mostly clockwise, with the characters going through doors from one room to another.

Interestingly, the Act 2 that originally takes place in the palace garden, has no parallel in the garden of this scenario. This serves as stage to the 1st meeting (1st act) between Tristan and Isolde. Interesting detail is the approach to the warning about Melot made by Brangäne, at the beginning of Act 2. Walls run and you see the dining room with the characters just like static figures of Madame Tussauds, simulating the arrival of Isolde with Tristan before Marke. Melot observes the scene. Brangäne moves freely while Isolde is giving and leaving the hand of Tristan. The beginning of the duet of Act 2 is in the same room. A ball of welcoming is in course but Tristan and Isolde wander as if they were the only ones in the room. All the other remain static, including the observer Melot. The "O sink ..." is already on the wall with three doors in white, were shadows of tree leaves are projected. At the time of the duet interlude, the scene moves and reveals Melot listening behind a door ... Overall this is a different approach, interesting and effective only less consistent in its decontextualization when making references to ships.

The website of the Opernhaus offers some photos of the production at http://opernhaus.ch/de/media_pr/fotodb/fotodb.php?prodID=94 which I invite you to see (unpublished here due to copyright).

The Opernhaus Zϋrich mixes classic with modern style smoothly. I found particularly interesting the fact they have small metal baskets, sponsored by Ricola Swiss brand, containing the famous herbs sweets.

An hour before the opera they all looked like this:

At the end of the 1st act - 1st interval, they were as follows:

Perhaps many of them in the pocket of Peter Seiffert, no?

I leave you with the usual photos and video of the curtain call. Please see how Seiffert gestures to the audience asking for apology and thanking for the understanding of the opera fans. The applause was a merciful one from an audience who knows and loves him.
