METropolitan OPERA, Nova Iorque, Temporada 2011-2012

(text in English below)

http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/

Metropolitan Opera, New York, 2011-2012 season

The Met's 2011-2012 new season (September to May) is one of the best among the great opera houses worldwide. All the details are available at:
http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/

The Met has 26 productions, seven of them new.
At the end of the season there will be three complete Wagner’s Nibelung Ring cycles, staged by Robert Lepage (a new production of the Met). The first on April 7th, 13th, 21th and 24th, the second on April 26th, 28th and 30th and May 2nd, and the third on May 5th, 7th, 9th and 12th.

As the Met is one of the few world theatres where there are often on scene four or five different operas simultaneously, I will mention the operas on stage in alphabetical order. I highlight in red those that, considering the singers, the musical pieces and my personal preference, I think they can be outstanding performances:

- Aida by G. Verdi, in February (9th, 13th, 16th, 20th, 23th and 28th) and March (3rd). With soloists Violetta Urmana, Stephanie Blythe and Marcelo Alvarez among others. A great production of the Met (in music, staging, choirs and soloists), set in ancient Egypt.

- Anna Bolena by G. Donizetti (September 26yh and 30th), October (3rd, 6th, 10th, 15th, 18th, 21th, 24th and 28th) and February (1st and 4th). A new production that will open the season with Anna Netrebko, Ekaterina Gubanova and Ildar Abdrazakov (three great Russian singers in the Italian repertoire) among others. An opera for belcanto lovers.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on October 15th at 18:00.

- Billy Budd by B. Britten in May (4th, 10th and 12th) with John Daszac, Nathan Gunn and James Morris.

- Das Rheingold by R. Wagner in April (4th, 7th and 26th) and May (5th). Lepage's magnificent production that premiered last season will be conducted by James Levine and has, again, excellent soloists, including Stephanie Blythe, Gerhard Siegel, Bryn Terfel, Eric Owens and Hans-Peter König.

- Die Walküre by R. Wagner in April (13th and 28th) and May (7th), inserted in the third Ring cycle. Lepage’s production directed by James Levine and with an exceptional cast, almost identical to last year’s: Deborah Voight / Katarina Dalayman, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Stephanie Blythe, Stuart Skelton / Jonas Kaufmann, Bryn Terfel and Hans-Peter König.

- Mozart's Don Giovanni in October (13th, 17th, 22yh, 25th, 29th and 31st), November (3rd, 7th and 10th), February (21th, 24th and 29th) and March (3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th and 17th). One of the best operas of the composer in a new production, with a sensational cast in many of the performances, including Marina Rebeka, Barbara Frittoli / Annette Dasch, Mojca Erdmann, Matthew Polenzani, Mariusz Kwiecien / Gerald Finley and John Relyea /Shenyang.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on October 29th at 18:00.

- Ernani by G. Verdi on February (2nd, 6th, 10th, 14th, 18th and 25th).
With Salvatore Licitra, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Angela Meade and Ferruce Furlanetto.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on February 25th at 18:00.

- Faust by C.Gounod in November (29th) December (3rd, 6th, 10th, 13th, 17th, 20th, 23th and 28th) and January (5th, 9th, 13th, 16th and 19th). A new (modern) production with excellent male singers: Jonas Kaufmann / Roberto Alagna / Joseph Calleja and Rene Pape / Ferruccio Furlanetto.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on December 10th at 18:00.

- Götterdämmerung (The Twilight of the Gods) by R. Wagner in January (27th and 31st), February (3rd, 7th and 11th) April (24th) and May (3rd and 12th). A new production of this fantastic opera, conducted by James Levine, with Debra Voight / Catherine Dalayman, Waltraud Meyer, Gary Lehman, Iain Paterson, Eric Owens and Hans-Peter König among others.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on February 11th at 17:00.

- Hansel und Gretel by E. Humperdinck will be on stage, as usual, on Christmas and New Year - December (16th, 21th, 24th, 26th, 29th and 30th) and January (3rd and 7th).

- Il Barbiere di Siviglia by G. Rossini, in October (1st, 4th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 19th, 22th, 26th and 29th) and February (4th, 8th, 11th, 15th and 18th). A “classic” of operatic seasons in which, at the Met and in some performances, has excellent soloists: Diana Damrau, Colin Lee, John Del Carlo and Ferruccio Furlanetto.

- M Mussorgsky’s  Khovanshchina in February (27th) and March (1st, 6th, 10th, 13th and 17th). A Russian opera with an impressive cast, largely made up of singers whose native language is russian (Olga Borodina, Vladimir Galouzine, George Gagnidze Vitaly Bilyy and Ildar Abdrazakov).

- La Bohème by G. Puccini, in November (18th, 22th, 25th and 28th) and December (2nd  and 8th) is another "classic" of this season.

- La Fille du Régiment by G. Donizetti in December (12th, 15th, 19th, 24th and 29th) and January (2nd and 6th). A production by Laurent Pelly that has been reviewed twice in this blog. The opera is a challenge for belcanto abilities of the two main soloists, in this case Nino Machaidze (Marie) and Lawrence Brownlee (Tonio). The speaking role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp will be an opportunity to honor a great singer of the past generation, Kiri Te Kanawa.

- La Traviata by Verdi, in April (6th, 10th, 14th, 18th, 21th, 25th and 28th) and May (2nd). One of my favourite Verdi operas, this production of Willy Decker will have as soloists Natalie Dessay, Matthew Polenzani and Dmitri Hvorostovsky.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on April 21th at 18:00.

- L'Elisir d'Amore by G. Donizetti in March (5th, 9th, 12th, 16th, 24th, 27th and 31st) will have a superlative cast including Diana Damrau, Juan Diego Flórez, Mariusz Kwiecien and Alessandro Corbelli. Even for those who do not consider this one of the most important operas of the composer, a cast like this makes the opera one of the best of the season.

- Macbeth by G. Verdi, in March (15th, 20th, 24th and 29th) and April (2nd, 5th and 9th). A remarkable opera of the composer with interpretations of Nadja Michael, Dimitri Pittas and Thomas Hampson /George Granidze among others.

- Madama Butterfly by G. Puccini in December (5th, 9th, 14th, 17th, 22th, 27th and 30th), February (17th, 22th and 25th) and March (2nd and 8th). A production of great beauty, by Anthony Minghella. The most tragic of Puccini heroines is sang by two great experts in the role of Cio Cio San, Liping Zhang and Patricia Racette.

- Manon by J. Massenet, in March (26th and 31th) and April (3rd, 7th, 11th, 14th, 17th, 20th and 23th). Another new production, by Laurent Pelly, that I had the chance to see in London last season and which is fantastic! The conductor is Fabio Luigi and soloists will be Piotr Beczala and, especially, Anna Netrebko. If she will repeat what she did in London, we can expect an overwhelming interpretation! It was the best performance I saw of Anna Netrebko, who I am an admirer. As someone wrote in this blog, Anna Netrebko is Massenet's Manon. An absolute “must”!.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on April 7th at 17:00.

- Nabucco by G. Verdi in September (27th) October (1st, 5th, 8th, 12th, 15th and 20th) and November (2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th and 17th). An opera that was one of the great successes of Verdi, where one can hear the famous choir interpretation Va pensiero, The soloists will include Maria Guleghina / Marianne Cornetti, Zeljiko Lucic, many others but, above all, on November 17th, Elisabete Matos!

- Rodelinda by G.F. Handel in November (14th, 19th, 23th, 26th and 30th) and December (3rd, 7th and 10th). A baroque opera with excellent singers, including Renée Fleming, Stephanie Blythe and Andreas Scholl.
It is a pity that this was the only Met Live broadcast that will not be seen at the Gulbenkian.

- Siegfried by R. Wagner, in October (27th) November (1st and 5th) April (21th and 30th) and May (9th). A new production under the direction of James Levine with interpretations of Gary Lehman, Gerhard Siegel / Robert Brubaker, Bryn Terfel and Deborah Voigt / Katarina Dalayman.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on November 5th at 16:00.

- Satyagraha by P. Glass in November (4th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 19th and 26th) and December (1st). An opera that I do not know.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on November 19th at 18:00.

- The Enchanted Island, a world premiere baroque fantasy with music by Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau and others. In December (31st) andJanuary (4th, 7th, 12th, 21th, 25th, 28th and 30th). Conducted by William Christie, it will have excellent performers, including Danielle de Niese, Joyce DiDonato, David Daniels and Placido Domingo.
Live at the Met in HD at the Gulbenkian on February 4th at 18:00.

- The Makropulos Case by L Janacek, in April (27th) and May (1st, 5th, 8th and 11th). An unlikely plot that, as a major attraction, has the interpretation of Karita Mattila.

- Tosca by G. Puccini, in January (10th, 14th, 18th, 21st, 24th and 28th). One of the best operas of the composer, the production is by Luc Bondy, and features performances by Patricia Racette, Roberto Alagna / Aleksanders Antonenko and George Gagnidze / James Morris.

I remind that throughout the season, for those who want and can spend an extended weekend (from  Thursday to Sunday) in New York, four different operas can easily be seen..

The Fanatics Opera / Opera Fanatics blog wishes everyone great opera performances, either live in New York or in HD at the Gulbenkian Foundation.

  4. Caro FanaticoUm

  7. You're more optimistic about Rodelinda than I am! With all due respect to Fleming... I think Strauss (or Korngold!) would be a better fit. Makropulos Case, on the other hand, I'm very excited about; with Jiří Bělohlávek conducting and Mattila in the title role, I think it has the potential to be great.

  8. Dear Lucy,
What makes me think Rodelinda will be an excellent performance is Andreas Scholl and Stephanie Blythe. And I completely agree with you concerning Makropulos Case. As I have never seen this opera in an acceptable interpretation, maybe I am not being fair with what will be on stage at the Met.
